Around Halloween \/ Samhain time people like to focus on the theme of witches. While there are a few Germanic and other holidays what also concern witches the time when there is a change in season and the veil between the realms of the living and dead is said to become thinner, those that commune with the dead and nature spirits are commonly looked to. While the Abrahamic infleunces on the West made the idea of the Witch a solely evil concept, their function within Germanic faith and society was much more of a medicine woman, Shaman \/ Seer, or even often priestess. Though, some negative connotations did exist. We all know that the Number Nine is a Sacred Number in Norse Mythology. In fact, the Number Three is a Mythological Number (for example), since it seems to be applied to the origins of a nation. Hengest and Horsa arrived in three ships, as did Cerdic and Cynric if I remember rightly. This also applied to the Cymru (Welsh) who arrived in Britain in three ships.
